Restoration of Judas' head
Restoration of Judas’ head

The state of the mural at the last supper is quite terrible.

The Judas part is no exception.

The condition of Judas’ head that has been cleaned and repaired is also quite serious.

From the state of the wall, it is almost impossible to feel Leonardo’s original.
Restoration of Judas’ head will require some last supper reproductions.

Of course, Leonardo’s drawing of Judas must also be consulted.

However, Leonardo’s original drawing has some differences from the final finished Judas.

Furthermore, in the drawings, the muscles of Judas’ neck are exaggerated, whereas in the murals, the anatomical depictions are slightly reduced.

The figure above shows a comparison of Leonardo’s original drawings overlaid on murals.

In order for the drawing to fit the mural, the image must be rotated slightly.

Leonardo prepares the drawings carefully, but in most cases it is customary to use them with some modification.

In the drawings, Judas is depicted as an old man, but in the murals Judas is depicted as a mature man.

Furthermore, in the drawings, the muscles of Judas’ neck are exaggerated, whereas in the murals, the anatomical depictions are slightly reduced.

Judas gaze direction

The part that needs further correction is the direction of Judas’ line of sight. In the drawing, Judas’s gaze is far above the head of Jesus Christ and is unnatural.

It looks like Leonardo’s complete drawing does not require any modifications, but in fact it has many modifications.

Mural condition – Judas’ head

The current head of Judas has a sharp outline, but the condition of the wall is not good enough to trust it.
What is common throughout the walls of the Last Supper is that these condition is so severe that, in a sense, there is little left over on what can be called Leonardo’s original.

In many respects I do not trust the depiction of the current mural.

It’s not a condition that deserves credit.

Four materials are essential to restoring the Last Supper.

One is the mural of the current the Last Supper.
The second is a reproduction has drawn by GGiampietrino.
The third is the Vatican tapestry.
The fourth is Leonardo’s drawings and his works.

The last supper I drew was made by comparing these four materials.
